At Floor Coverings International of Floor Coverings International Huntsville, we love bringing you creative insight and perspectives from bloggers who are kind enough to share their wisdom and how they got started. Today we have an interview with Lisa Shatzer, interior designer and longtime blogger at Fern Creek Cottage. You can follow Lisa on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.
Please tell us a little about yourself.
Hi, I’m Lisa Shatzer author of the blog Fern Creek Cottage. I live in Austin Texas with my husband, two sons and our sweet kitten Cinnamon. We moved to Austin last summer and have been busy making the home and garden reflect our style. If I have a day to spend by myself doing something just for me it would be spent antique shopping and then lunch at a favorite restaurant (I love food!). Hiking with my boys is another favorite activity of mine.
Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?
I really started blogging on a whim. Back in 2008, when I first started my blog, I barely knew what a blog even was. Our family was in the process of adopting a baby and I thought it would be a great way to share with our family when our son was placed with our family. Down the road a friend introduced me to a couple of home design blogs (which I didn’t even know existed) and I was hooked. Since I enjoyed reading design blogs so much, I decided to make the transition to a home design blog myself. My family of menfolk could care less how I decorate our home so it is fun to share my projects with like-minded people.
How would you describe your design style?
I love cottage decor with a focus on gray and white rooms with natural wood accents. I also love the European farmhouse look. My style is always evolving. For example, my rooms have become more clean and streamlined over the years, however I still like to keep things cozy with patterned curtains, fun pillows and vintage accents. I strongly believe that you do not have to spend a lot of money to have a beautiful home. I enjoy sharing DIY projects on my blog that show how you can bring your favorite design style to life on a budget.
Where do you find most of your inspiration?
I used to love to read decor magazines, but currently I find a lot of inspiration online by reading blogs and spending too much time on Pinterest. I love trash to treasure projects so walking through a thrift store and looking for an item I can transform gets my creative juices flowing as well.
Tell us about a recent project you’re proud of.
My most recent project was giving our guest bathroom a complete makeover. The room used to be dark, outdated and masculine. With very little money and some elbow grease the room was transformed into a light, bright, and lovely space! Even my boys who normally don’t pay any attention to how I decorate the house took notice and were really happy with the results. I’m glad I no longer cringe when a guest asks to visit the powder room! I pass by the room a lot as it’s next to the laundry room and when I peek in I get a big smile on my face.
